Mahdum Ahmed, sultan of the Fur?
Add to Cart Add to Lightbox DownloadNyala, Sudan; January 14, 2006. Mahdum Ahmed, on of 2 or 3 mahdums of the Fur tribe sultanate, shares his views of the Darfur situation with me. A mahdum is a headman just lower than the sultan. Mahdum Ahmed, even though a headsman, lives a simple life in a simple home. He has been offered political work with the government but has felt his place to be with his people the Fur. The Fur has been the ruling tribe in Sudan for centuries, and only lately has that been challenged. According to him, the issue is land; and also the arab agenda for the spread of arab based islam in Africa. He has witnessed attacks on his people, not only by government backed janjaweid millitia, but also on the political front. His words are 'this is our land, we do not want war, but we will not let our land be taken'. Photo by Wally Nell
