Qat eating in Yemen
Add to Cart Add to Lightbox DownloadSana'a, Yemen, September 21st, 2006 - Chewing and selling qat in the old part of the city of Sana'a, capital of Yemen. Society as a whole in Yemen seem to revolve around the custom of chewing qat. Around noon or 1pm until around 6pm, all work seems to grind to a halt and most males are seen to either be buying, selling or chewing qat. It is said that chewing the leaves gives a mild sensation as if the patron has had a few espressos. It is said the first hour one becomes a little more energized and animated, followed by a time when those who are so minded would want to write poetry. Photo by Wally Nell/UNAIDS/ZUMA
